The Complex Systems Summer School Journalism Fellowship 2025, offered by the esteemed Santa Fe Institute (SFI), is a prestigious journalism grant for accomplished reporters. The SFI invites local and international journalists with a proven track record of reporting on issues related to complex systems to apply for this exclusive residential scholarship in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This scholarship is designed to provide journalists with a comprehensive learning experience in complex systems science. As part of the iconic four-week Complex Systems Summer School at the Santa Fe Institute, two selected journalists will have the unique opportunity to interact with graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, and experts through lectures and labs taught by world-renowned faculty.
The student will be able to communicate with top scientists merging across fields at the Santa Fe Institute and will be motivated to add to a team project at the Complex Systems Summer School. Equipped with a new gratitude for the record of and trends in complex systems science and the conditions and restrictions of present scientific theory, the student returns to their daily reporting better equipped to communicate the inter-associative solutions to the complex issues they experience.
Advantages
- An allowance of $6,250 for the five-week course is given to students at the Complex Systems Summer School, and students will be accommodated at the Institute of American Indian Arts. The allowance may improve the student’s existing income, or the reporter’s employer may take out their ongoing income with the allowance. Registration in Santa Fe Institute’s Complex Systems School is given without payment. Travel payment is also offered. Santa Fe Institute advantages are not attached to this provision.
Qualification
The scholarship looks for achieved, vibrantly reporting full-time reporters.
- Candidates are regarded whose reporting in the federal and foreign news media indicates an appeal in science or issues that interdisciplinary science can assist in settling.
- Each candidate is required to indicate their status as a full-time working reporter for a minimum of seven years. Freelance reporters are required to indicate frequent reporting for the previous seven years.
- Candidates may be editors, producers, reporters, program hosts, or writers. They may operate in newspapers, news web pages, magazines, radio, or television.
- Journalists from all nations will contest equally, but top preference will be given to journalists working primarily in English.
- There are no academic requirements.
- Experts currently working mainly in public details, trade press, public relations, academia, or government without all of the mentioned certificates are not qualified.
Conditions
Selected candidates are required to accept the following conditions:
- To live full-time in the Santa Fe region for the complete duration of the grant.
- To abstain from occupational reporting at the time of the fellowship.
- To partake completely in the Complex Systems Summer School.
- To provide a minimum of one adjustable structure submission for the Complex Systems Summer School fellows and one official lunchtime course at Cowan Campus for Santa Fe Institute students during the last week of the grant.
- For foreign nominees, the needed travel certificates, which include a proper visa with a status permitting direct reimbursement and receipt of United States reimbursements, must be obtained.

- Five previous instances of skilled work that indicates enough protection of complex associated science or science applied to complex systems problems (approved file formats consist of PDF, active URL, or scan.
