New Prospects Open For Immigrants In Major Sectors Despite The Decline In Job Openings In Canada

Canada’s employment market has observed a reduction in employment openings, which has created a more competitive environment for employment seekers, including immigrants.

According to Statistics Canada, there were 564,100 opening roles at the end of the third quarter of 2024, a significant reduction from the peak of 983,600 in 2022.

Regardless of the total reduction in employment vacancies, specific sectors are still going through development, offering prospects for immigrants to acquire jobs in these industries.

Immigration News Canada (INC) revealed that the current report, dated 16 December 2024, indicates a reduction in permanent and temporary employment openings.

Permanent positions dropped by 27,800, and temporary positions reduced by 4,100. Full-time roles were also reduced by 19,300, while part-time employment noticed a reduction of 12,600.

The unemployment-to-employment opening percentage has risen to 2.6, implying that there are 2.6 unemployed individuals for every obtainable employment, approximately 2.0 in the past quarter.

Reducing Openings In So Many Professions

Specific industries are experiencing fewer employment vacancies. Among the ten significant professional groups, four skilled major reductions:

  • Sales and service professions, which dropped by 12,500 openings.
  • Health professions fell by 8,200 openings.
  • Transport, trades, and equipment operators, with a reduction of 6,900 openings.
  • Production and utilities professions, which fell by 3,100 openings.

These trends demonstrate that immigrants must contemplate concentrating on other developing industries that still provide employment prospects.

Sectors With Increased Employment Opening Rates

While some professions observe reductions, reports indicate that others are developing significantly.

The following roles possessed the highest number of employment vacancies at the end of the third quarter of 2024:

  • Food counter attendants, kitchen assistants, and linked support professions, with 30,130 openings.
  • Registered nurses and psychiatric nurses, with 23,905 openings.
  • Retain salespersons and visual merchandisers, with 19,970 openings.
  • Nurse assistants, orderlies, and patient service partners, with 17,170 openings.
  • Transport truck drivers, with 13,170 openings.

These roles provide prospects for immigrants seeking employment in Canada’s developing employment market, mainly in the healthcare, retail, and transportation industries.

Employment Industries With Robust Annual Development

Specific professions have observed remarkable year-on-year elevations in employment openings. These have to do with the following:

  • Firefighters with a 93.4 percent rise in openings.
  • Instructors of individuals with disabilities, up to 74.6 percent.
  • Production and transportation logistics coordinators, increasing by 72.6 percent.
  • Financial counselors, with a 54.7 percent rise
  • Civil engineers reached 38.1 percent.

These professions demonstrate the increasing demand for workers in emergency services, logistics, engineering, and finances, making them significant fields for immigrants to investigate.

Reducing Employment Openings In Some Industries

Most employment classifications have faced massive reductions in openings compared to the past year. These have to do with:

  • Clerks, store shelf stockers, and order fillers fell to 41.3 percent
  • Other client and data services delegates dropped to 40.4 percent.
  • Food counter attendants, kitchen helpers, and related support professions fell to 36.5 percent.
  • Transport truck drivers dropped to 34.6 percent.

This decrease indicates these positions may not provide several prospects in the coming months.

Unemployment Rate And Regional Variations

  • Canada’s total unemployment rate was 6.8 percent in November 2024. Hence, unemployment rates differ by region.
  • According to INC, Newfoundland and Labrador have the highest percentage, at 10.8 percent, followed by Prince Edward Island at 8 percent, Ontario at 7.6 percent, and Alberta at 7.5 percent.
  • On the contrary, Saskatchewan has the lowest unemployment rate, at 5.6 percent, followed by B.C. at 5.7 percent and Manitoba at 5.8 percent.

Concentration On Growing Industries For Immigrants

Despite the total reduction in employment openings, specific industries continue to provide prospects for immigrants. Healthcare, finance, engineering, and logistics are among the sectors with increasing employment vacancies.

Concentrating on these fields can elevate immigrants’ prospects of acquiring stable jobs and contributing to Canada’s economy.
